ABOUT US
The Cape Fear Food Council began in 2016 as an informal collaboration between organizations and community members in and around the Wilmington area. The group is based in New Hanover County, but takes a regional approach to food systems with a strong interest in surrounding rural counties. We work closely with other food councils in southeastern North Carolina and welcome members from counties where food councils do not yet exist. We work to coordinate our collective efforts and advocate for system-wide change on issues such as supporting local family farms, combating food insecurity, and reducing food waste. The council hosts quarterly business meetings and coordinates or participates in community events during the other months of the year. All meetings and food council events are open to the general public - we welcome your participation! Please visit the calendar page for a schedule of activities.
The Cape Fear Food Council coordinates opportunities for community members to volunteer at local family farms and school or community gardens. These activities give people the chance to lend a hand on projects like planting, harvesting, or weeding. This brings the community closer to the local food system while lightening the load for small farms and community food projects. Visit the Crop Mob page for more information.
Food councils across North Carolina are supported by Community Food Strategies, a multi-organizational team of food system experts. They work to support and develop North Carolina’s food councils through trainings, tools, and network building.
